New Strings
A piano has around 220 strings. 40 to 50 wound bass strings and the rest are plain steel. They range from long and fat in the bass to short and thin at the high end. A string can break while playing or during a tuning and should be replaced as soon as possible to avoid straining or breaking the hammer assembly.
I carry a full range of universal fit bass strings and exact size treble strings for immediate replacement on older pianos or I can have a custom string made up to exactly match the original but will require a return visit.
-Universal fit bass - $25 each (same day)
-Custom made bass - $75 each (includes return visit)
-Plain steel treble - $15. each (same day)
As a piano ages the strings loose there ability to produce a clean clear note. This is due to stretch, hardness and corrosion. Most noticeable in very old pianos as a dead muffled sound in the bass, buzzing in the mid range and false beats in the mid to upper treble which makes it impossible to tune a clean unison. (All 3 strings of the note vibrating exactly the same). If your piano is still in good overall shape and you wish to bring back that new sound, one thing you may want to do is replace the strings. A complete custom made set, or just the bass to get the most effect for your investment.
